Today, Sunday, the Moroccan security authorities announced the arrest of 157 people for their involvement in clashes and riots due to the rituals of Ashura revival in a number of cities in the Kingdom.
And some neighborhoods in the cities of Casablanca, Tangiers, and others, on Saturday night and Sunday, turned into a battleground between residents and the security forces, who intervened to stop the Ashura celebrations.
A communiqué issued by the General Directorate of National Security stated that these confrontations also resulted in the injury of 17 police employees and 11 members of the public forces, as a result of being pelted with stones and firecrackers.
Material losses and broken windows of 8 cars belonging to the national security services and two cars belonging to the local authorities were recorded, in addition to counting material losses in a group of cars and private properties.
The police managed to confiscate dozens of rubber tires and about a thousand units of meteors and fireworks, which were intended for use during the celebrations of this occasion.
The communication stated that “adult suspects were kept under garde à vue, while minors were subjected to police surveillance, subject to research conducted by the judicial police teams under the supervision of the competent public prosecutors, in order to determine all the criminal acts attributed to them.”
